When it Rains it Pours, Especially in Missouri During The April 2017 Flood

When it Rains it Pours

When it Rains it Pours

Until this month and since I was growing up, I loved a good flood.  It was exciting.  My parents would drive us around and take pictures.  We would talk about what happened last time and question if this one would be bigger than the last.

In 2012 my husband bought a farm across two creeks-WITHOUT ASKING ME.  I said “That creek gets up 10 or 12 feet. Do you realize that?”  He said, “Oh, it will be fine, I will love getting flooded in.”  And we have, loved it several times.  Until this time.

Missouri April 2017 Flood

This time 12 feet was 20 plus feet.  The biggest flood our area has ever seen.  There were no landlines and we don’t have cell service at our home.  We did have internet and TV part of the time.  What that meant was, we could watch the devastation from our home and for our friends and family from afar.

I couldn’t hug my mom and dad as they watched their legacy go underwater- submerged.  I couldn’t give my mom a comforting word.  She, however, is a strong woman…

The Aftermath

So, what do we Small Town Ozark Mountain River People do?  We stick together, muscle through and find our glass half full. (I learned that from my mom.)  As soon as the water started going down the work began quickly with a fiery passion.  Prayers were sent up and people became better people.  Volunteers emerged.  It is at times of struggles that we grow.

What are the Liggett’s going to do, you might ask.  We are going to pull ourselves up by our boot straps, fix our fences, cut out a new road, check on our friends, help our neighbors, wash the mud out with our family, cry and laugh on one another’s shoulders and come out stronger on the other side.

So friends if tragedy strikes you or if it already has, be thankful for what you do have and muscle on- something better is waiting for you on the other side.
