The First Step To Eating Healthy, For A Horse

The First Step To Eating Healthy, For A Horse

Aren’t we all creatures of habit?

It is a common goal among most of us to live healthy happy lives. Let’s admit it, its not always easy though, to make time and stay on track with a healthy diet regimen. You have to plan ahead, shop for healthy items, and not lose track of your goals. Unfortunately, there seems to always be something distracting…like a piece of your aunts famous chocolate cake.

It is proven, however, that staying on a strict eating schedule promotes the best health for ourselves.  If this is true for us as people it is surely just as important or more important for our horses to have a strict feeding schedule too.  Our horses rely upon us and as horse owners, we want the best nutrition for them.

The First Step To Eating Healthy, For A Horse

No matter if you feed one, two, or three times a day, always feed at the same time-have a schedule. Also, make sure the times are not too close together or too far apart.

This strict feeding schedule can be beneficial to your horse in many ways:

  • Promote Nutrient Uptake
  • Stabilize Weight and Energy
  • Help Prevent Colic

Included in this schedule should be 24 hour access to water.  Just like we need to drink more water, so do our horses.  You can’t expect proper digestion without proper hydration.

If you have been feeding haphazardly, like many of us eat (when we can or when its available) make changes gradually…we are all creatures of habit.

In the 21 days it takes to form a new habit, you will be getting your horse on track, while also keeping yourself on track.

More food for thought, remember your horse isn’t aware of daylight savings time changes. Try to schedule where you won’t have to change the actual time during this time change.

Happy and Healthy Eating!
Always,
Bridget and Kate
